An end to near-sightedness?

Yet another interesting article. It's about contact lens for kids likely to become near-sighted to prevent it. It'd be pretty neat if it worked. I could've used it when I was a kid! A bit questionable though... does that mean the kids have to wear these lenses for the rest of their life? In which case, how is that better than wearing lenses to correct your vision? I suppose it means that when you take them off you'd still be able to see. Or do they have to wear it a few hours a day? one day a week? perhaps maybe if they're worn till a certain age, the eyes are less likely to change? Still, worth keeping an eye out for in the future.
