We met quite a number of interesting people this past month. Here's a little snippet of some of them. =)
Boomerang Lady
She ran the bommerang store that we walked into and ended up chatting with us for about an hour! It was more like her talking and us smiling and nodding our heads. She told us about how she was a catholic missionary helping this nun, and about God stuff.. how there were 3 so called 'special messengers of God' - mother Theresa, Princess Diana, and this nun she was helping. A bit strange, but we didn't exactly want to ask for more details. It was neat that she was so passionate about it, but she went on for so long! And after she was finished talking, she was like "Ok, God bless. Take care" expecting us to leave, but we were like "but we haven't got our boomerangs yet!"
Italian Owner at Cafe Danieli
On July 1, went to this cafe at the rocks. The owner was really outgoing and friendly to everyone, chatting with all the customers. He found out we were Canadians and came back with a surprise for us, a Canada flag! Apparently the guy running the store next door was Canadian and told him it was Canada day that morning. We wanted to go back just to visit him, but unfortunately ran out of time. He was right though in what he said.. "Come for the food, stay for the service"
P from Hillsong Church
She was from the UK and relatively new to Sydney, but attended Hillsong in the UK. Had a nice chat over free coffee after service.
Couple who ran the Bed and Breakfast @ Mermaid Beach - Lovely chats with them and they helped us with booking a surfing lesson, directions on getting to the national park. Very homey!
Gary - Our surfing instructor who thought we must've been sisters. We don't really look alike do we?!?
Michael - Booking manager at Hotel Watermark. It was his 3rd day on the job when we arrived. I think Sheila wrote about the story, but basically the hotel didnt' get our reservation and was fully booked. Ended up sleeping in their conference room on roll out cots for the night. Anyways, he came to work in the morning and got us a room.. gave us free buffet breakfast for all the mornings we were there and sent up a fruit platter for us too. Felt bad for him. He had just arrived in Brisbane from Sydney a few days prior, was sick, and he hadn't found a place to live yet.. what a way to start his first week.
Asian Foodcourt Man - It was a busy weekday lunch at the foodcourt in the city mall in Brisbane. He ended up sitting down while I was waiting for Sheila and Mich to come with their food and ended up chatting. Gave us some 'fatherly' advice of what to see and do while in Brisbane.
Owner of Marcoola Beach Motel - The typical laid back Aussie bloke. Came in to set up our pull up couch with a can of beer in one hand.
Candy from HK @ Sydney Airport - I spent my first night in Sydney at the airport, since my flight arrived late at night and Sheila & Mich were arriving the next morning at 6am. Got chatting with Candy about 5:30am when she woke me up because she thought I might have a plane to catch in the morning and didn't want me to miss it. Ended up grabbing breakfast with her.
David from BAC - Lisa's cousin who we met in Sydney but from Vancouver and also goes to BAC. Small world eh? He even knew who our family's are.
Zack and Shannon at Monkey Mia - These kids started talking to us out of nowhere in Monkey Mia. Their family was on a 7 week road trip from South Australia to the Darwin, then down the west coast before heading back. They told us all about their 4 dogs: Coolie, Marshmellow, Zimmer, and Teddy. Coolie can run more than 60km/h and would swim into the water to save Zack if he pretended to be drowning in the water.
