After an early morning start, arriving at YVR at 5am to check-in, I am now sitting at the airport in Denver, Colorado. 5 more hours until I fly out to Frankfurt, then to Addis Ababa, then Gondar. I'll be either on a plane or in the airport for another 32hrs...
Airports are an interesting place, full of people on the move. I had a chat with one of the workers at a store here. It turns out he's from Addis Ababa! Came here around 15yrs ago to study and his parents still live there. It was nice hearing more about Addis and getting reassurance that it's generally safe - reminder to just take the usual precautions regarding food/water/belongings. He even gave me a lock for my bags since he suggested that I have one. I'm thankful for his encouraging words.
Started taking my antimalarial pills here. Note to self - I should listen to the instructions and take it with food and a full glass of water. Didn't feel well initially, very close to getting sick but managed to keep food down and now I'm fully recovered again.
For some reason, my ankle was really sore on the plane. I guess it has to do with pressure change, similar to how some people can tell if it's about to rain because they "feel it in their bones". I wonder why.. more pressure on the area that's already weak? Well, bone gets stronger and responds to stress so perhaps this is a good thing in the long run..
Random note, the washrooms in this airport are "Tornado Shelters"...
Looking forward to what's ahead. It sometimes seems a little unreal and not sure what to expect, but I suppose that's all part of the learning/growing experience.
